Dustin’s first martial
arts training began by watching dodgy martial arts movies in the early
eighties. Although this never amounted
to any more than a few mock kung fu battles with his brothers. Real training began in
Wing Chun Kung Fu in In 1999, Dustin moved to In 2002, University
schedules started to interfere with training schedules, so Dustin was
admitted into Sifu Richard Wong’s private class
of a few select students. 2004 was Dustin’s 6th
and final year of architecture study.
For Dustin’s final year assignment, he chose to combine his two
passions, Architecture and Kung Fu, and develop an architectural philosophy
based in the traditions of Taoism.
This increased Dustin’s interest in the philosophical aspects behind
the martial arts, as well as introducing Dustin to alternative architectural
philosophies such as Feng Shui. Dustin achieved the rank
of Level 1 Black sash in March, 2005, and having no more university
commitments after graduation, returned to the public class as an assistant
instructor. In February, 2006 Dustin
moved to Port Macquarie to work more
closely with his architectural mentor.
Sifu Richard Wong encouraged Dustin to open a local branch so that
Dustin could continue to train in Wing Chun, and share his martial arts
experience and philosophies with others. Dustin continues to train
Wing Chun at the Flynn’s Beach Surf Club,
and practices Chi Kung on the beach at sunrise. He is also pursuing his interests in Feng
Shui, Taoism, Zen, energy medicine, healing, and other areas that he finds
very compatible with the internal energy systems that are developed through
the kung fu & Chi Kung. Dustin continues to
maintain a very close relationship with Sifu Richard
Wong and the head branch of Internal Martial Arts in Sydney. Dustin still collects
dodgy martial arts movies and can still be accused of being “too nice.” |
